India: What is Intelligence?

What does IQ measure?

Is intelligence fundamental to human beings?

Are all human beings intelligent?

Do we have skewed metrics when we say some human beings are more intelligent than others?

  2. What is intelligence?
Intelligence is defined as general cognitive problem solving skill . It is a mental ability involved in reasoning, perceiving analogies, calculating and learning. Earlier it was believed that there was one underlying factor at the intelligence base, the g-factor, but later psychologists maintained that it is more complicated and could not be determined by such a simplistic method. Some psychologists have divided intelligence into subcategories.

  3. For centuries, philosophers have tried to pinpoint the true measure of intelligence. What makes some brains smarter than others? Or Are intelligent people better at storing and retrieving memories?
It is widely accepted that intelligence is inherited but can also be related to the environment. While studies showed that heredity is an important factor in determining intelligence; it was suggested that environment is a critical factor in determining the extent of its expression. It was also suggested that there is a genetic influence on IQ(Intelligence Quotient) and spatial abilities. So in short our genes determine the quality of our intelligence, our ability to integrate and process information.
Environmental factors can play a role as well, but in fact they are capable of slowing down our mental processes rather than enhancing it. There is no evidence to indicate that our environment can increase intelligence to a relatively high level.
An important question which remains unanswered is:
Whether a machine be can made to think on its own or to react to a situation all by itself better than humans since they are not influenced by genetics or by the environment.
